After our whole-home mold remediation following Hurricane Ian, keeping our home mold-free became a top priority. To maintain a clean environment and reduce mold risks, my family follows a simple, natural routine every month to ensure our drains stay fresh and clear. It might seem tedious, but for us, the effort is well worth the peace of mind.
In this post, I’ll share our step-by-step guide to keeping your drains clean and minimizing mold growth using baking soda and vinegar. This method is not only effective but also non-toxic and safe for the environment. Download the FREE printable on my Pinterest page.
Steps for Monthly Drain Cleaning:
- Pour Baking Soda Start by pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain. Baking soda helps to dissolve mineral deposits and organic materials, and it has disinfectant properties that combat bacteria and fungi.
- Add Vinegar Next, pour 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain. The combination of baking soda and vinegar will create a foaming reaction that helps to clean the drain by dislodging debris and mold.
- Let it Sit Cover the drain to keep the reaction contained and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. This waiting period allows the foaming action to work on the debris and mold inside the drain.
- Flush with Hot Water After 10-15 minutes, flush the drain with boiling water if you have metal pipes, or very hot tap water if you have plastic pipes. This will help remove the dislodged debris and clean the drain thoroughly.
Why This Method Works:
- Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and mild abrasive that helps to break down buildup.
- Vinegar is a mild acid that reacts with the baking soda to create a foaming action, which helps to lift grime and mold from the surfaces.
- Hot water helps to flush away the loosened debris, leaving your drains clean and fresh.
