6 Ways to Keep Chickens, Ducks & Geese Cool This Summer

Simple things that actually work – tested under the Florida sun with real backyard chaos

Summer heat in Florida is no joke, and it’s not just us feeling it. Our backyard chickens, ducks, and geese have to deal with the blazing temps too. Some flock care advice online makes it seem like you need a high-tech setup just to survive the season, but let’s be honest, most of us are just trying to keep the coop standing, remember to refresh the water multiple times a day, and stay on top of the flies.

Over time, I’ve found a handful of simple, realistic ways to help our birds stay cool. Nothing fancy. Just small things that really make a difference.

Here are six Florida-tested tips we are using  in our own backyard this summer:

🧊 1. Frozen Treats

Watermelon chunks, chopped herbs, or a veggie mix frozen in muffin tins make the perfect flock-friendly popsicles. Our birds love them, and as a bonus –  it’s a fun job for the kids to help with.

💧 2. Electrolytes in Water

Just like us, birds can lose a lot of fluid when it’s hot out. We add poultry-safe electrolytes or a splash of apple cider vinegar to their water. It’s a small thing, but it helps them stay hydrated and bounce back from the heat faster.

🌬️ 3. Solar Coop Fan

This has been a game-changer. A small solar-powered fan keeps air moving inside the coop during those hot, still afternoons. It doesn’t need electricity, and even a little airflow can make the coop way more bearable when they are laying their eggs.

🧊 4. Frozen Water Bottle Trick

Freeze a few plastic water bottles (just peel off the label first) and place them in shady rest spots or nesting boxes. Chickens especially like laying next to them when it’s hot. It’s an easy DIY cooling trick that you can reuse all summer. We simply wash off the dirty, melted water bottles, and re-freeze each night.

🌿 5. Plenty of Shade

Shade is everything in the Florida heat. We’ve set up umbrellas and shade cloths, but honestly, our chickens have claimed the best spots on their own. Their favorite place right now is under the rabbit hutches, where there’s natural sand and a little breeze. They’ve turned it into a full-on dust bath haven. (Thankfully, our bunnies are litter-trained, so their droppings stay far away from the dust bath zone!)

Another favorite hangout is inside my planter boxes-right where the aloe plants are. I guess they like the dirt there too.

We haven’t planted everything we want yet, but we’re working on it. I plan to add a bunch of lemongrass and marigolds this year, and sunflowers are on the list for next summer. Creating natural shade zones, whether it’s from plants or structures, gives your birds options for where to cool off when the sun is at its worst.

🪨 6. Cool Ceramic Tile or Paver

Stick a tile or paver in the fridge, or honestly, just leave it inside your house overnight to cool down. In the morning, place it out in the run. The chickens and ducks will find it and lay right on top of it. It’s a super low-effort way to give them a cool-down spot that really works, especially on those extra hot days when they need relief fast. We keep a wagon by the door, so we just load them up and out each evening / morning.

✨ A Few Extra Tips from Our Coop:

  • Check waterers in the morning and again mid-day
  • Watch for signs of overheating like panting or holding wings away from their body
  • Ducks and geese love water misters, but keep your chickens dry unless they choose it on their own
